Third Winter is Here!

Third Winter is Here!

And it is all about you. You and warm but lightweight scarves, cowls, shawls and sweaters.

First Winter (Thanksgiving-Christmas) was about gift knitting for many of us;
Second Winter (January-February) was about bulky, super-warm cowls, hats and mittens.

Third Winter is the best winter — spring is almost here, and when it does snow, it melts pretty quickly. It’s time to move toward dk and fingering weight scarves, hats, shawls and sweaters. Items that are warm enough for late winter but lightweight enough for cool spring days. They even work for cool summer evenings!

My favorites:
As Above So Below in Kirara or Koigu; Koigu Linen Stitch Scarf in Koigu or Claudia Handpaints; Daybreak in Malabrigo Sock; Anything in Canopy, one of our new favorites; Holden Shawlette in Ella Rae Lace Merino; Linton in Malabrigo Silky Merino, Magnolia, or Manos Silk Blend; Dutch Cowl in Jade Sapphire Silk Cashmere, Mystifying Embrace in Smooshy or any of the other wonderful wraps in Sheryl Thies’s Knitting by Nature or Get Hooked on Tunisian Crochet.

What are your favorites Third Winter projects?

Frosting, Color Affection & Other Obsessions

I’m what I call a Yarn Foodie. I love yarn and I love to eat. So, in my quest for the perfect yarn, when I discover yarns so yummy I want to taste them, I know I’ve found a beautiful yarn.

It’s no surprise that I was the kid at the birthday party who, when they cut the cake said, “No cake, just frosting, please.”

Therefore, my obsession with “Silk Cashmere” yarn from Jade Sapphire is more than understandable. It’s to be expected.

The label says “55% silk, 45% cashmere” but I know there’s got to be at least 5% butter in there, too. It’s yarn, but it’s frosting!

More on the yarn in a second. Speaking of frosting…

If you are looking for the ultimate frosting recipe – and I mean ultimate – check this one out from my mother-in-law.

Veronica’s Vanilla Frosting Recipe

I wonder if I could spin this into yarn? I’m sure you must see the similarity to this…

It all started with Hannah Fetig’s “Featherweight Cardigan” and my quest for the perfect yarn to knit it in…

When I laid my eyes on the “Silk Cashmere” colorway “Wasabi”, I knew I was in love.

Knitting the “Featherweight” with “Silk Cashmere” was delightful.
Yummy color. Beautiful hand.

I love wearing this garment!  Silk Cashmere was the perfect choice!

But then came my infatuation with with The “Color Affection” shawl pattern by Veera Valimaki.  This pattern is true genius. There’s something about the 3 color combination that is so compelling. The trinity thing. Picking three colors together.

We have a galvanized tin tub at The Knitting Tree filled with what we call “Color Affection Trios” – 3 color combinations that we picked out for Veera’s pattern.

You can check out our “Color Affection Trios” on our Sister Store’s website Lakeside Fibers!

We’re thinking of putting a giant tin tub in the shop and charging $5 for a roll in the cashmere!

Knitting “Color Affection” (My Hubby, Mark, calls it “Color Erection”) compelled me to find the perfect color combo. There were so many workable combinations, so many color plays and options. At last a choice must be made…

I chose our “Tutti Frutti” Trio!  This is what gets me going. This is better than sex if you’re a visual and color fanatic.

This yarn has such a lovely hand, and creates an unbelievably lightweight fabric – just right for summer knitting!  And, combine that with a great pattern like Color Affection – this is what knitting on the porch is all about!

Isn’t it lovely!

For me, the joy and quest in knitting is the marrying of the perfect yarn with a compelling pattern. Silk Cashmere with Color Affection.

With this combination the infatuation starts with the thrill of the cast on and lasts until you bind off.

For a Yarn Foodie my appetite is satiated.
